NO IDEA

Inspirational post title, no? Well that's the title of one of the most surprising, uplifting and thought-provoking (in the truest sense of the word), plays I’ve seen this year. Lisa and Rachel went out to ask the British public what their next play should be about. No Idea, is it.It’s a tough act when a play has just two people on stage for the entire production. They have to spark off each other and the audience to keep people's interests (one of them improvised by heckling us when someone laughed FAR too hard in the audience, before the punch line of her joke). These two are intelligent comedians and indeed, chameleons. You’re never sure if the stories they tell about each other are true, but it doesn’t matter either way. Never shying away from the fact that Lisa is about four foot high and uses a wheelchair, they bring comedy to their frank discussions on disability. Their imitations of members of the public were second to none (although I thought Lisa’s rendition of Jack Nicholson was a little shaky). They convincingly put together a quick comedy song and dance routine and Rachel managed to hold her own by acting out a montage sequence, with no-one else to support her in the scene and with no props (bar a chair).
I’m not a big laugh-out-louder in theatres and cinemas. I prefer to knowingly smile to myself, sometimes a small chuckle escapes when I really enjoy a joke; but Lisa and Rachel were so surprising with their humour that they caught me off guard. I laughed out loud at least four times. Which makes it an absolute winner, in my eyes. No Idea is on until July 31st at the Young Vic, The Cut, Waterloo, SE1 8LZ

PING!: A TABLE TENNIS REVOLUTION

Ping! London is the brainwave of Colette Hiller of the Sing London arts group, who last summer placed 30 pianos around the capital for anyone to play, each with the notice “Play me, I’m yours”. This year, instead of pianos, 100 ping pong tables have been positioned around London’s landmarks, squares, shopping centres, estates, offices and train stations.

Delivered in partnership with the English Table Tennis Association (who will bring Ping! to four more cities over the next two years, returning to London for 2012), Ping! London is supported by the National Lottery and aims to get more people playing sport as part of the legacy of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Geronimo Inns is lucky enough to have a table positioned right outside their Kings Cross site, The Betjeman Arms. So stop by if you can, and remember to take part in their Ping! inspired events and games, such as 'Ping O'Clock' and 'Passport to Pingland'.

FIELD DAY FESTIVAL

My all time favourite festival returns to Victoria Park this year this coming Saturday 31st. With a stronger line up than ever before, the festival will play host to the likes of Moderat, Border Community label founder James Holden and Caribou. And of course, Field Day just wouldn't be the same without the bustle of activity which is the Village Green. Here you can take part in the Meringueathon – following on from the success of carrot eating, and onion peeling contests from previous years - Human Wheelbarrow, Tug of War hosted by the Tug of War Association, Needle in the Haystack, Sack Racing, Egg and Spoon, Blindfold Tea Drinking Relay Race and much more…

HIP-HOP HITS THE BARBICAN

I thought I disliked hip-hop music. Or at least, I didn’t really get it. After watching Over the Edge at the Barbican Theatre last night, I’m moving over to the hip-hop side. Not only is the Barbican Theatre one of my favourite theatres in London anyway…(a theatre, with loads of housing estates around, and a church? It’s the randomness that I love), but it was particularly fun with the dance-based act. I didn’t know what to expect last night, but when a group of ‘youfs’ (they’re probably in their late thirties, but with all the muscles and dance moves, I’m sticking with youfs) came out body popping and dancing - crowd pleaser is an understatement. With no talking, you’d think they’d be no plot. There were storylines a-plenty. The choreographers had done an amazing job. My personal favourites were the opening sequence and the Scary – Stig (my title) scene. The opening scene has all the dancers come on stage and act out getting ready for a normal day at work. Eating cereal, getting dressed, getting on the tube. It was BRILLIANT – and performed with so few props - their dance moves and expressive faces were all that were needed. The Scary-Stig scene had some of the dance crew come on stage dressed in a white uniform, covered from head to toe. You couldn’t even see their faces. They danced in complete synchronicity. It was truly impressive and a real one-off.I can’t recommend it enough. Not only is it an amazing night out, but you feel way hipper when you come out. 21 - 25 July 2010 19:45, 17:00 Barbican Theatre, Barbican EC2Y 8DS

CELEBRITY MASTERCHEF IS BACK

I can't believe that I was giddy over the fact that Celebrity Masterchef started again last night. The sun was shining, I know that I should've been out walking the dog or playing tennis with friends or drinking Pimms somewhere...but I wasn't. I was glued to my sofa as the first programme showed a couple of new twists to the format. Celebrity Masterchef, how I've missed you...celebrities - who can't cook...cooking. On the telly.

DRINKS HIS WAY AROUND TOWN

…Not one of our team but Keith Barker-Main from the Metro, and in a purely professional capacity of course. He went to The Lonsdale in Notting Hill last week and from the sounds of his blog, he loved it. He spends a large chunk of the piece raving about how good looking the staff are. I personally think the Intelligent PR crew are better. That’s un-biased of course. Check out his blog and next time you are out for drinks pop by The Lonsdale for one of their cocktails!
